Temasek Shophouse2025

Orchard Road, Singapore
Private Lounge, 30.5 Sqm

The Sunbird Lounge in Temasek Shophouse is designed as an airy, light-filled extension of its courtyard with lush greenery.

Centred on dialogue and creation, the glass display embodies the theme Design and Made in Singapore. As a curated showcase of drinking vessels that brings together contemporary artists and ceramists who live and work in Singapore, as well as internationally based Singaporean artists, it draws on the relationship between conversations, creation and rituals of drinking. The curatorial approach foregrounds diversity, besides artistic backgrounds, techniques, and forms, but also in the confluence of narratives through which artists engage themes of place, memory, transmutation, and continuity. Placed side by side, this assemblage forms a spectrum that spans from quiet reflection to conceptual exploration, underscoring the absence of a singular creative ethos, embracing instead a constellation of approaches and ideas.

The flooring pairs Peranakan mosaic tiles with a patterned carpet of corresponding motifs, blending textures and materials in a contemporary “Nanyang” sensibility. Completing the space, the Today Bench by Studio Juju reinterprets the traditional Straits Chinese settee in oak, its perpendicular joints balancing strength and lightness—an expression of modern craftsmanship rooted in heritage.
